Tonight we did something a little different for some of our homeless friends. We started off with a wash of the feet in a savlon anti-bacterial solution with soap, followed by a rinse and then another wash with soap, another rinse, followed by anti- bacterial spray, and then a nail clipping, ending with massaging a lovely smelling lotion into the clean feet and then fresh socks and new shoes... All while folk were enjoying delicious and nutritious bread and soup. I did not expect the response from the guys living on the street... many were pleading to have it done and clearly for good reason as I realized looking at their uncared-for-feet. Many had sores, were very dry and had long thick nails. It brought home for me the reality of some of the harsh conditions these guys live with. Often homeless folk spend their days on the streets as they get chased from places they sit to rest. The atmosphere during the time was serene, with a clear sense of the presence of God. Many people who were passing by stopped and watched and lingered as their hearts too were moved by this simple act of love. I am so grateful to God that I get to live a life filled with opportunities like this.
